To get to Fushimi-Inari shrine (伏見稲荷大社), Take the JR Nara line to Inari station or Take the Keihan line to Fushimi-Inari station. The shrine is just east of both of these stations.

1.Fushimi-Inari Shrine (伏見稲荷大社)

Fushimi-inari is an important Shinto shrine in southern Kyoto.　The entire complex consists of five shrines. A pathway leads 4km up the mountain and is lined with hundreds of red torii gates and dozens of stone foxes. The fox is considered the messenger of Inari (the god of cereal grains).

Take the Keihan line from Fushimi-Inari station to Shichijo station (150 yen, 3 stops.) Walk from Shichijo station to Sanjusangendo (500m, 6mins.) Take Ex.2 or Ex.4 and walk east on Shichijo-dori.

Sanjusangendo (三十三間堂)

The temple’s name refers to the number of intervals between the pillars (Sanjyusangen = 33 bays).

At the back of the hall are 28 guardian statues in a great variety of expressive poses and
1,001 Senju-Kannon statues stand in the 120 meter-long main hall.

Walk to Kiyomizudera (2km, 25mins). Keep walking on Shichijo-dori. Head north on Higashioji-dori.

Kiyomizudera(清水寺)

Kiyomizudera is best known for its huge wooden veranda that juts out from its main hall, 13 meters above the hillside below. The steep approach to the temple is lined with shops selling Kyoto handicrafts, local snacks and souvenirs.

Walk to Yasaka shrine (1.5km, 18min). Stroll north along the preserved historic streets.

Yasaka shrine (八坂神社)

This colourful shrine is considered the guardian shrine of neighbouring Gion.

This shrine is particularly popular with Japanese as a spot for the first shrine visit of the new year.
