Ukai is a traditional fishing method in which trained cormorants—large diving birds—are used to catch fish such as ayu (sweetfish). This centuries-old practice has a history of over 1,300 years in Japan.
In Arashiyama, visitors can watch the spectacular ukai demonstrations from the riverbanks or enjoy the experience from a viewing boat on the water.
