The most popular temple in Kyoto, offering an outstanding panoramic view of Kyoto
Kiyomizu-dera is one of Kyoto’s most famous temples, attracting over 5 million visitors each year. Originally built at the end of the 8th century, its main hall was reconstructed in the 17th century. The temple enshrines Kiyomizu-gata, the eleven-headed, thousand-armed Bodhisattva Kannon, who is revealed to the public only once every 33 years. Kiyomizu-dera is also renowned for its striking location, perched on a cliff.
The main hall features a large wooden platform supported by 139 massive pillars, offering spectacular views of Kyoto. The temple grounds cover an expansive 130,000 square meters and include 30 buildings. Visitors can admire numerous Important Cultural Properties, including a three-storied pagoda and historic belfries.
“Kiyomizu-no-butai”
The famed wooden stage, Kiyomizu-no-butai, extends from the main hall, perched dramatically over a cliff. Rising about 13 meters above the ground, it is supported by an intricate lattice of timber joined without a single nail. From this vantage point, visitors enjoy breathtaking views of the cherry and maple trees below, which blaze with color in spring and autumn, as well as a sweeping panorama of Kyoto in the distance.
The main gate and the pagoda

The magnificent main gate, known as Akamon (Red Gate) for its striking color, stands 14 meters tall and 10 meters wide. Nearby, the beautiful red pagoda rises 31 meters into the sky. Both structures are adorned with richly colored esoteric Buddhist paintings, including celestial maidens and dragons intricately depicted on the ceilings and pillars.
Otowa-no-taki (Otowa waterfall)

This waterfall is fed by a single source that splits into three streams, from which visitors drink using cups attached to long poles. Each stream is believed to offer a different blessing: one for longevity, another for academic success, and the third for a fortunate love life. However, drinking from all three streams is traditionally considered greedy.
