A well known as Kyoto’s most beautiful street
Gion Shirakawa-dori (祇園白川通) in Kyoto’s historic Gion district is a beautiful street that runs along the Shirakawa River. It’s one of the best places to experience the charm of old Kyoto, alongside nearby Hanami Koji-dori (花見小路通). Gion is known for its rich cultural heritage as an entertainment district and as a hub for licensed geisha teahouses. Despite its modernity, the area still retains quiet, picturesque spots perfect for strolling, where you might even catch a glimpse of a geisha or maiko.
Notably, Mineko Iwasaki, the famous geisha featured in Memoirs of a Geisha, once lived here. The street is lined with willow, cherry, and plum trees, adding to its charm. Without any overhead wires or telephone poles, the beautiful wooden houses that line both sides of Shirakawa-dori enhance the timeless atmosphere, making it a delightful place to explore.

In spring, cherry blossoms are illuminated under the moonlight, creating a magical atmosphere that celebrates the arrival of the new season. The Gion Shirakawa area is enchanting both day and night, making it a popular spot for couples seeking a romantic experience.
