A well known as Kyoto’s most beautiful street
Gion Shirakawa dori(祇園白川通) in Gion district is very beautiful street along the Shirakawa river in Kyoto. It’s one of the best streets you can feel old Kyoto along with Hanami Koji dori(花見小路通) near by. Gion is historical entertainment district, and one of the licenced geisha tea-house area. There are still some lovely places left for a stroll around. You can occasionally glimpse geisha or maiko.
Mineko Iwasaki, a geisha who was referenced in the book and film, “Memoirs of a Geisha”, used to live in a house from here. Willow trees, cherry trees and plum trees line on the street of cobblestones. There are no overhead wires and telephone poles, and beautiful wooden preserved houses are on the both side of the Shirakawa dori street, to make your strolling a pleasure.
During the spring season, cherry blossoms are lit up under the moonlight to create a fantastic atmosphere, and celebrate the arrival of a new season. Gion Shirakawa area is very romantic day and night,so it is also popular among couples.
