The lanterns carrying prayers will be floated on the Katsura-gawa river in the darkness.

It is believed that the spirits of ancestors come back to this world every year on August 16.  On the same day, Gozan-okuribi, one of the most famous Kyoto’s summer events is also held for the same purpose. You can see the sight of burning Chinese characters on the mountains and the sight of many lanterns floating mysteriously from here, Arashiyama.
