As night falls, lanterns carrying prayers are gently released onto the Katsura River, creating a serene and unforgettable scene.

According to tradition, the spirits of ancestors return to the other world on August 16, the final day of the Bon festival. On the same evening, Kyoto’s famous Gozan Okuribi bonfires are lit on the surrounding mountains to guide them on their journey. From Arashiyama, visitors can witness both the glowing mountain characters and the countless lanterns drifting along the river, making for one of Kyoto’s most enchanting summer spectacles.
