Sumiyoshi Festival at Sumiyoshi Taisha
Sumiyoshi Festival at Sumiyoshi Taisha
July 30 – August 1
On the final day, the Mikoshi Togyo (portable shrine procession) takes place. The procession departs from Sumiyoshi Taisha and makes its way to Shukuin Tongu Shrine in the neighboring city of Sakai. The lively parade attracts large crowds of spectators along its route.
The Sumiyoshi Festival is celebrated over three days, with the Nagoshi Harai Shinji purification ritual being one of its highlights on the second day.
During this ritual, women and children dressed in Muromachi-period (14th–16th century) costumes pass through a large ring made of straw as a prayer for purification and good health. Visitors are also welcome to take part in the ceremony and offer their own wishes for good health.
