Toka Ebisu Festival / Kyoto
January 8 – January 12
Toka Ebisu, the first major festival of the New Year, is held at the Kyoto Ebisu Shrine, located just south of Kennin-ji. The enshrined Ebisu-sama is one of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune and is regarded as the god of fishery and commerce. The festival is called “Toka Ebisu” after the 10th, which is Ebisu’s birthday. Although the ritual takes place mainly in front of the main shrine and is not visible to visitors, thousands of people gather daily at the small shrine in Gion to pray for a year of prosperous business, and a variety of events take place on the grounds.
On 10th, and 11th women in traditional costume (Maiko and actresses) come to the shrine to hand out lucky bamboos.
