Toka Ebisu Festival / Kyoto

January 8 January 12

Tōka Ebisu, the first major festival of the New Year, is held at Kyoto Ebisu Shrine, just south of Kennin-ji. Ebisu-sama, one of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune, is regarded as the god of fishery and commerce. The festival is named after the 10th, Ebisu’s birthday. While the main ritual occurs mainly in front of the shrine and is not visible to visitors, thousands gather daily at the small Gion shrine to pray for a prosperous year in business, enjoying a variety of events on the grounds.

On January 10 and 11, women in traditional costume—Maiko and actresses—hand out lucky bamboo to visitors, adding a colorful and festive touch to the celebrations.
