Wakakusayama Mountain Burning Festival
Wakakusayama Mountain Burning Festival
January 24 / 18:30 – 19:30
Mt. Wakakusayama, rising about 350 meters above sea level just behind Nara Park, is the site of a spectacular New Year event held annually on the fourth Saturday of January. A sacred fire is carried down to a small shrine at the foot of the hill by a procession of Buddhist monks. The hill is then set ablaze, followed by a display of around 200 fireworks, and the flames continue to burn for approximately 30 minutes, creating a dramatic and unforgettable spectacle.
