Aoi Matsuri Festival

May 15 / 10:00 16:00

The Aoi Matsuri is one of the most important annual rituals for both Shimogamo Shrine and Kamigamo Shrine. With over 1,400 years of continuous history, it dates back to the Heian period and remains a cherished tradition in modern Kyoto.

The festival’s highlight is the “Roto no Gi,” an elegant Heian-style procession featuring around 500 participants dressed in exquisite ancient court attire and traditional makeup. The parade follows an approximately 8-kilometer route through central Kyoto, beginning at the Kyoto Imperial Palace and proceeding to Shimogamo and Kamigamo Shrines.
