DESCRIPTION:Kyoto endured a long history of natural disasters and epidemics\, and in response\, purification rituals known as goryō-e were introduced over a thousand years ago to appease the spirits and seek protection from misfortune. During a severe famine in the early Heian period\, sacred spears were gathered from across Japan\, along with portable shrines (mikoshi)\, and offered in ceremonies to honor the deities and calm disease and unrest. One of the earliest and most significant of these rituals developed into the Gion Matsuri\, first held during a devastating plague in the Heian period. \n\n\n\nToday\, the festival’s highlight is the Yamaboko Junko parade. The towering yamaboko floats are built entirely without nails\, using traditional Japanese joinery techniques. DESCRIPTION:“Daimonji Gozan Okuribi” is the Buddhist festival of the feast of our ancestors. Known as “the Bon festival”\, it is held on the evening(20:00 P.M) of August 16th. Gigantic Kanji characters and other motifs are lit on the five mountains surrounding the city of Kyoto. Now It is a famous as the Kyoto summer image. This Buddhist custom has evolved into a family reunion holiday during which people return to their family’s ancestral places. Once there\, they visit and clean their ancestors’ graves for when the spirits of their ancestors revisit earth. These Bon fires are intended to see off the spirits as they return to the other world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDaimonji Viewing spots\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n大 the character “dai” at Daimonji\, go to the Kamo-gawa River bank.\n\n\n\n妙 the character”Myou” is Kitayama-dori near Notre Dame Jogakuin.\n\n\n\n法 the character”Hou” is the Takanogawa River bank (north of Takanobashi Bridge).\n\n\n\n大 the character”Dai” at Hidari-Daimonji is Nishi-Oji-dori.\n\n\n\nthe motif “Funa-gata” is the northwest of Kitayamabashi Bridge on Kitayama-dori.\n\n\n\nthe motif “Torii-gara” is best seen from Matsuobashi Bridge [Map-F] and Hirosawa-no-Ike Pond.\n\n\n\nFrom the highest point of Funaokayama Park (free entry)\, One of the best viewing spots\, you can have a panoramic view of all the mountains without the torii-gata motif.
